Natural Earth for GIS data

People often ask me where they can get GIS data to use for projects, analysis and general mapping. In the UK we now have OS OpenData, which is very nice and very detailed. There's also a new GIS portal from the Office for National Statistics - built using the Geoportal Server. Other GIS datasets are available, from organisations like Natural England, but in this post I thought I'd highlight the excellent - and totally free - Natural Earth site which is very well known in the geodata community but perhaps not more widely. It really is absolutely fantastic.


A little bit of technical information....

  • Natural Earth Vector comes in ESRI shapefile format, the de facto standard for vector geodata. Character encoding is Windows-1252.
  • Natural Earth Raster comes in TIFF format with a TFW world file.
  • All Natural Earth data use the Geographic coordinate system (projection), WGS84 datum +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +no_defs
Whether you're looking for data to make a general world map or a more detailed local area map you will find what you are looking for here. It's not as detailed as OS data for Great Britain but then many GIS users don't need that level of accuracy. Another screenshot below showing the various download options...


Finally, taking my inspiration from the worst website in the world, and Ken Field's blog - I've made an absolutely awful map using some of this data*. Can anyone do a worse one?


*I actually did this as part of my work in developing some new GIS modules. I tried to pack in as much bad practice as possible just as an extreme example of what not to do.

Google Fusion Tables

A short post today about the wonderful Google Fusion Tables. It may sound baffling, but Fusion Tables are basically a service (provided by Google, obviously) that allows you to manage and map large databases 'in the cloud', as they say. In plain speak, you can upload large tables of data and display them and map them and share them. For someone like me who is into mapping data, this is great because all you need to do is get your data into kml format. This can be done with normal GIS software like ArcGIS but the best way I have found is to use shpescape.



The example above is just something I created a couple of years ago in ArcGIS and then recently uploaded to Fusion Tables. It's a 'tile finder' for Ordnance Survey data so you can figure out which 20km tile you need to get based on which area you are interested in. This is not the point here though - I'm just showing how you can get data into google map format very easily.

If you work with lots of data on a regular basis - and particularly any mappable data - you should take a look at Fusion Tables...

CloudMade

This post is all about CloudMade. What is it? This is how they describe themselves:

"CloudMade helps you make the most of map data. We source our maps from OpenStreetMap, the community mapping project which is making a free map of the world. Our aim is to continue the democratization of geo data and to expand access to open geo data through a range of simple yet powerful tools and APIs."

OpenStreetMap's UK homepage can be found here. So, it's basically all about mapping the world but not charging the earth for it. Or anything at all! OpenStreetMap was started in 2004 by Steve Coast, one of the co-founders of CloudMade. Play around with the map below...

Why does this all matter? Because it's the start of a movement which could make available geo-data which was previously very costly and heavily restricted by licensing issues. It could be particularly good for GIS users in the UK. CloudMade have downloads available for a number of different data types, including Shapefiles, for the entire world. The coverage is sometimes patchy (though not for most areas), but it's growing by the day.

The Shapefiles are not complete, and the administrative data is in polyline rather than polygon format, but there is a lot of useful stuff here. In conclusion, the UK data is not yet comparable to high cost alternatives, but this is a good start!
